Jewish Crown Heights - a NEW walking tour - SOLD OUT

  • Meet on the corner of Nostrand Avenue and Eastern Parkway (On the Northeast Boulevard) Brooklyn, NY 11225 United States (map)

From the age of open Immigration to the post-war phenomenon of great Hasidic courts relocating to the "Goldene Medina" (Golden Land,) Brooklyn has been one of the great centers of modern Jewish history. We'll stroll down Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn's great boulevard, discussing its origins in the late 19th century through its current Caribbean, Hasidic, and hipster sections. We'll explore history, culture, icons of American Jewry, and the Crown Heights Riots whose repercussions still exist today.

We will start this tour on Nostrand and Eastern Parkway - to explore the rebirth of non-Hassidic Jewish life in Crown Heights in the 21st Century. Along the way, we will learn about and see:

  • Venues and monuments of Jewish life from the great age of Jewish immigration (1881-1914).

  • Doctor's Row - mansions from the dawn of the 20th century.

  • Brooklyn Jewish Center/ Ohalei Torah Yeshiva.

  • 770 Eastern Parkway - the world headquarters of Chabad.

  • Story of the Crown Heights Riots.

And how can we not include a visit to a heimishe bakery? You will also have the opportunity to buy Judaica or explore Kingston Ave and the heart of contemporary Lubavitch Life.

Your guide on this adventure will be Dr. David E. Kaufman, Founder and Director of NEW YORK JEW: Center for New York Jewish History, Culture and Community.
