On this NEW Zoom presentation, we will explore the Upper West Side’s cultural and rich Jewish history. This neighborhood is a “powerhouse" of synagogues, schools, educational institutions and socially vibrant organizations. We will also discuss the local architecture which exemplifies Beaux Arts, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco.

Some of the sites we will visit virtually include: The JCC of Manhattan, Congregations B’nai Jeshurun and Rodeph Sholom, Lincoln Square Synagogue, the Society for the Advancement of Judaism (SAJ) and the Jewish Center, a neo-classical Orthodox shul founded by Rabbi Mordechai Kaplan. This synagogue site was among the first in the U.S. to feature recreational space and a swimming pool!

We will discuss how this special community continues to shape the identity of American Jewry to this day.
