Washington Heights (Again) - A New talk on Zoom

  • This is an online event on Zoom (map)

Once known as the “Frankfurt on the Hudson” this neighborhood now called “Little Dominican Republic” has been home to generations of immigrants. There were the New Yorkers who migrated “uptown” when the subway expanded, the German Jews fleeing Nazi persecution, and then the Hispanics seeking a better way of life. Washington Heights has embraced them all.

Explore the sights and sounds In The Heights, not with Lin-Manuel Miranda, but with tour guide Susan Birnbaum on this new Zoom presentation as she virtually travels from 155th Street to 181st and beyond. Her talk will follow the development of this neighborhood - at one time filled with estates for “weekend getaways”, now made famous as the title of a Broadway show and a movie.

A native New Yorker, Susan Mills Birnbaum is the owner and operator of SusanSez NYC Walkabouts. She has been a licensed NYC Sightseeing Guide since 2002, and is also actively involved with the Guides Association of New York City (GANYC). Susan is a member of many NYC historical societies, and volunteers as a docent at the Museum of the City of New York.

This is Susan’s third presentation on Zoom for The Conservancy, having previously talked about the Jews on the Upper East Side “Gold Coast”, and Remnants of the Jewish Bronx.

The presentation will last approximately 90 minutes followed by Q & A.
