Colonial Jewish New Amsterdam - a walking tour

  • Meet in front of the steps of the National Museum of the American Indian 1 Bowling Green New York, NY, 10004 United States (map)

Later American Jewish history is much more heavily explored, but seldom do we explore the stories of the first Jews that arrived in the continent, the first synagogue, or the Jews of the Revolution. This tour will start at the dawn of New Amsterdam's history where Fort Amsterdam was built. See Peter Minuit Plaza and hear the saga of the first permanent Jewish residents to arrive in this new colony. We will explore how they survived, thrived, and played an integral part in both American and Jewish history.

While downtown, you will:

  • View the harbor as we discuss why the great metropolis is here, and what was the state of World Jewry at the dawn of the colonial period?

  • Visit the first structure built as a synagogue in what is now the United States.

  • Learn the story of the early Jewish individuals who labored for full rights in the colonial period.

  • Discuss Wall Street - Jews were involved in the NYSE from it's origins

  • See Federal Hall - hear about Jewish representation at Washington's inauguration.

End your tour at the oldest surviving cemetery in the U.S. which we hope to enter pending availability.

Your guide on this adventure through time will be Jonathan Goldstein. who after a stint in finance in NYC, made Aliya in 2006 and got his hands in the dirt, earning an MA in Land of Israel Studies and Archeology at Bar Ilan University as well as the Ministry of Tourism's Guiding Certification. Since then, he has been creating Jewish heritage travel experiences around the world focused on exploring questions of identity and our place in this complex world we live in. His primary areas of expertise include Israel, Central Europe, New York City, and the last 4,000 years of Jewish history.

For anyone interested in the American Jewish experience, this tour is a must!
