Unlike the Jewish community of the Bronx, Jews settled in Brooklyn early in New York history, forming a significant community in the 19th century, and continuing to be a major presence to this day. In its mid-20th-century heyday, there were nearly one million Jews. Currently, there is still a Jewish population that embraces a rich mix of Russian, Syrian, Mizrahi, Mitnagdic, Hasidic, and liberal Jewish Brooklynites.
